Creepy movie that kept me glued to my seat!

I have always been interested in witches down through history; what made them choose that life, what made them tick. This is a bleak look at why some people ( men did as well) might possibly have succombed to witchcraft. Life was brutal and dismal back in the 1600's. Witchcraft seemed to offer a way to transcend that misery - well, that is what witches have believed. The lead actress was outstanding but the whole cast were as well. I highly recommend this movie. It has an authentic feel to it with the stark setting, costumes, and the great acting of the cast.

    Disturbing, unsettling

It tells a story about paranormal activity , daughter was great, the most disturbing, unsettling, amazing films I have ever seen. I didn't like the scene with the baby!! Film on the dark side, need more lighting.

  • One of the best films seen in a long time!

Director Robert Eggers is a breath of fresh air in the film industry, read some reviews to grasp his commitment to story telling, authenticity, and just excellant production. We thank him and look forward to all his future works. The Lighthouse, his second film, does not disappoint!

  • Outstanding, but not for kids or people that are disturbed by its evil vs religion folkore (like The Crucible)

The directing and editing lay out the story very well....suspenseful, yet there are no big holes in the plot - something that plagues so many films today. The photography is top quality and purposeful in scope and effect. The story is far more frightful than most people would guess, though it is not so much blood and gore; it's the palpable course of evil being revealed.

  • The VVitch story is closer to reality unlike Hollywood's fantasy witches

Five stars for this movie with flawless story. Unlike many nonsense Hollywood witch movies, This is about 1700’s family who were forced out by community for lacking of Christian belief. They moved to plain land next to the forest. Evil nature starts to test on the family members for their faith. The rest will make your soul wish to run away, Great story and an excellent picture..

  • 4.5 Out Of 5!!!

I gave this movie a 4.5, well, because there really can't be a 5 star movie! There are just too many variables. This movie is really a very good movie. Some may find it starting off slow, or may not be able to grasp the early American way of speaking. It has a mixed brit/Scott/Irish twang to it, but if you stick with it you will be ok. I believe this move is shot very much like M. Knight S. but the difference is that this story ends a lot better than most of M. Knight's do. The movie will eventually tie up any loose ends you might feel you are missing so stick it out if it gets a lil slow for you. If I were to have any negatives it would be one: I am a photographer, so I know that shadows and darkly lit shots convey specific moods in a photo or in a film. But there are parts here in The Witch that are too dark for too long, and this might make the viewer start to concentrate on that rather than the plot. And when that happens their attention starts to sway. I bought this movie the day after I saw it in the theater. I am willing to bet that if you are into dark thriller type of movies that get inside your head versus the junkie "slasher" films - then you will buy it too!

  • Could be better

Pretty good flick, Glad I got it off ebay and not saw it in any theater. Slow moving, but a different way of telling a story. IT was worth the price I paid.

  • somthings missing

The acting was great but when I purchase a movie entitled witches I expect to see some witches not old English conversation. Thee and thou just don't satisfy my taste. Was not up to my expectations.

  • Good old fashioned family dysfunction

The loss of the baby, Samuel, had to be a great shock to everyone, and "let us name a scapegoat" barreled on from that point. The Salem witch scare all over again. Who was truly a witch was unclear, until thomasin took her flying lesson. The real goat got the best deal of all. Very good movie, though. Much psychological drama. Great acting. A keeper. Thank
