We're gonna need a bigger boat!

Based upon a true story, Chris Pine gives a wonderful performance of a down-to-earth Coast Guard Petty Officer just trying to do the right thing. I tried to cross the bar once in a 16 foot boat, and the seas were just 6 feet! Decided to call it quits after the first wave, and just motor around the bay. For his character to take on 30+ foot swells: 60+ MPH winds, rain and darkness is incredible. The computer graphics are realistic and the tension palatable. A great tale of peril on the sea!

    The Finest Hours

The strong point of this movie is the massive storm at sea. A small coast guard boat rescues the sinking crew of an oil tanker off Mass. in February 1952. The small coast guard boat get tossed around like a small rubber ball. That is the high point of this movie. The characters and the story line is very shallow. It is the typical good guys coming to the rescue and all works out in the end (this is a Disney movie). If that is enough for you then this movie is fine. But if you want more to the movie than a massive storm and a rescue at the end then you might want to look elsewhere for a movie to watch.

  • Wonderful movie

I don't normally care for non-fiction stories, but I vacation in Cape Cod and am familiar with the setting. And, because I knew the ending, I was willing to watch it (unlike Perfect Storm which I will never watch again) - It was one of the most stressful movies I've ever seen, and I will watch it again. Chris Pine and Casey Affleck were both excellent and really drew me into the story almost as much as the special effects - just an incredible production and I can't understand why it was a dud at the box office - I guess if it doesn't have sex and gore, it's not popular with today's viewers. Too bad for them!

  • inspirational

As a retired active duty marine of 30 years this movie was so inspiring and inspirational that it has renewed my faith in the military of the United States regardless of the demeaning way the current administration views the military of this great country. Yes, I'm no fan of the current administration and never will be!!!!!!

  • Great storm scene but a number of egregious technical flaws

A great depiction of the challenges of getting a rescue boat over a shoal in weather where the sane would normally not take the risk. Regarding the ship, it was not a T-2 tanker engine room that was shown. Those ships were turbo-electric variable speed synchronous motor propulsion and the flooding shown in the engine room would have disabled propulsion a long time ago. A number of the controls and indicators shown did not seem to make any sense. Nonetheless, it was interesting to note that steerage was being maintained via using chain falls. This is something that can be done when all else fails. Regarding the vendor of this product, it arrived on time and the DVD was in the conditioned promised. I had no playback problem. I would do business with this vendor again.

  • A True Story worth telling!

I was specifically interested because I did serve in the U.S. Coast Guard. I had positive experiences because of the humanitarian missions of the Coast Guard. This story goes beyond my experience to an extreme example of the courage and skills exemplified by the members of this service. The story does have a "sweet" side with the romance of one of the heroes of this true story giving it a good story line. Good special effects in the action shots. I would have liked to see it in the theater in 3-D, but this is definitely worth watching with the DVD version

  • THIS IS FOR REAL

THE FINEST HOURS is a true account of the GREATEST SMALL BOAT RESCUE in Coast Guard history. We talking the saving of 32 of 33 people on board a T-2 tanker which was cut in half and sinking off the Cape Cod coast. At the same time, another T-2 tanker, further up the coast, was also sinking. Most of the CGs assets were directed to the 2nd sinking ship, leaving the 1/2 ship without aid. That is until Bernie Webber and his crew of 4, in a 12 seat CG rescue boat, set out to help these desperate individuals. In the most horrific weather and having to traverse the deadly Cape Cod bar (which with every storm shifts position) thru 60-70 foot storm waves, which can flip and roll any boat on the best of days losing not just boats but lives. The Chief Engineer aboard the stricken tanker struggles to give his crew more time, while Capt. Webber is driven, backed by his crew, who are petrified but loyal to their oath "Sempre Paratus" = ALWAYS READY. Further, the CG has a saying, "you HAVE to go out - you don't have to come back". Sacrificing their lives for those in danger, if needs be. THIS IS A FANTASTIC - ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT - HEARTFELT "TRUE" MOVIE. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.
