When you need to keep your home clean, the right vacuum cleaner will help you get the job done. Vacuums are designed to make cleaning a breeze so that you spend less time cleaning and more time doing what you love. Vacuums come in a variety of styles and options to choose from, which makes it easier to find the one that best suits your needs!

What types of vacuum cleaners are there?

When it comes to vacuum cleaners, there are more choices than ever before. From robot vacuums to bagless, handhelds, and uprights, there’s something that works for everyone’s needs. There are 5 main types of vacuum cleaners:

Upright vacuums: Upright vacuum cleaners stand upright and are pushed on wheels. One of the most popular upright vacuums is the Dyson. Upright vacuums have brush rollers to deep-clean carpets. These are the most common and most popular type of vacuum cleaner. They often have removable attachments for cleaning curtains, stairs, and may even have a setting that allows the vacuum to be used on hard floors, too. Upright vacuums are the most powerful cleaning tools for the home. The upright vacuum is generally the easiest for people to use, even if they’ve never used one before. Outside of using an attachment or switching the height to work on a hard floor, upright vacuums generally just need to be plugged in and turned on. The user then guides it along by pushing it. Upright vacuums may need a bag or be bagless. Most bagless varieties also include air filters to help capture more dust and dirt with the goal of improving the air quality in your home.
Canister vacuums: Canister vacuums are composed of a vacuum head and a canister that captures the dirt. The motor is housed in a separate part of the canister. The vacuum head can often be changed with a variety of different attachments and accessories depending on your needs. They can be used to clean walls, curtains, stairs, and furniture. Many people find the canister vacuum to be a happy medium between the stick and upright vacuum. The canister vacuum is also one of the most expensive style of vacuum cleaners, but it is more versatile than an upright vacuum. The most popular canister vacuums are made by Kenmore, Eureka, Oreck, and Dyson.
Stick vacuums: Stick vacuums are slim and lightweight. They have small heads that are easy to manoeuvre around furniture and can get into narrow spaces. If you’ve ever visited a restaurant with carpet, you’ve probably seen someone use a stick vacuum at some point. They are designed to deal with minor messes. Stick vacuums are the least powerful of the vacuum models. This vacuum works great for hardwood floors, rugs, and light carpets. It is also a great choice for smaller apartments due to its compact size and easy storage. Stick vacuums may be cordless as well as bagless. The most popular models include GOOVI, Bissell, and Dyson.
Handheld vacuums:Handheld vacuums are portable, battery-powered machines that are designed to deal with messes in small areas. The most famous of all handheld vacuums is the DustBuster. Dyson and Eureka both have well-respected handheld vacuums. They are great for hard to reach places, such as corners. They’re also popular because they make cleaning out the car easy!
Robotic vacuums: These machines can zip around different rooms and clean while you are busy with other household tasks. Robotic vacuums, such as the ones made by Roomba and Shark, have gained in popularity since their arrival on the market in the early 2000s. Some robotic vacuums can even be turned on remotely by a smartphone so that they can remove dirt and dust while you are not home. These vacuums can reach places that are difficult to reach with traditional vacuums, like underneath the couch. Robotic vacuums tend to have a higher price tag than traditional models, but they do the work so you don’t have to (provided that you keep it charged!)

How are Bagged and Bagless Vacuum Cleaners Different?

Bagged vacuums have a bag that must be taken out and disposed of when it is full. For bagless machines, the canister can be removed and the contents dumped. Both types have different advantages:

Bagged vacuums: These vacuums are hygienic, as the closed bags contain the dirt and debris.
Bagless vacuums: These vacuums are eco-friendly, as they do not make additional waste with the bags. It is easy to know when these vacuums are empty. Many bagless models include air filters to help capture dust, dirt, and allergens.

What Should you Consider when Looking for Vacuum Cleaners?

Choosing a vacuum cleaner that works for your needs is crucial to saving time and energy. You should consider:

Cordless or corded: Cordless vacuums can be taken anywhere without having to worry if there is a plug nearby. Cordless vacuums must be charged and do not have a steady stream of power, which can make them less powerful. Since cordless vacuums run off a battery, they do have a window of time they can be used. Corded vacuums have a restricted area of cleaning that is measured by the length of the cord. Corded vacuums also tend to be a bulker than the cordless. Cordless vacuums can also be used outside to clean the patio, patio furniture, or the inside of your car.
Bagged or bagless: Vacuums cleaners with bags can further reduce allergens in the air. They need to be emptied less often than bagless vacuums. Bagged vacuums also release less dust and debris into the air during use. Some bagged vacuums can seal themselves once removed from the vacuum. Bagless vacuums allow less down time when cleaning the vacuum. Bagless vacuums also allow you to empty debris on-demand and are super simple to clean. There are no bags to buy. Bagless vacuums clog far less than bagged vacuums. Many bagless vacuums have built-in air filters.
Type: Depending on the size of your home and the kind of floors you have, some types of vacuum cleaners may work better than others. If you have little space in your home, such as a small one-bedroom apartment, a stick vacuum or canister vacuum may be better. Stick vacuums are easy to store and are perfect for small areas. Canister vacuums are a bit bigger, but they have more accessories and may be used to handle multiple cleaning chores. Larger spaces may be better served by an upright bagged or bagless vacuum or a canister vacuum. Anyone with a vehicle or who has little messes that happen in certain areas could be best served by also having a handheld vacuum. It may also be important to consider whether you need a vacuum, be it an upright or handheld, that can be used to clean up liquids. Not all vacuums can do that.
Weight: Lighter machines are easier to use while heavier machines can pack more power to deep-clean your floors. If you have stairs or plan to use the machine to clean drapes or furniture, you may find that a lighter vacuum is preferable.
Accessories: Some vacuums come with accessories that are equipped to deal with pet hair, corners, and bare floors. If you have drapes, you’ll want to look at vacuums that come with accessories (or where additional accessories may be purchased) that are made specifically for cleaning drapes. If you have pets, you’ll want accessories that help remove embedded pet hair and can deep clean the carpet and furniture to remove pet dander. If you have hard floors, you may want to look for a vacuum that has settings for both carpet and hard floors.
Suction power: While bagged vacuums have the strongest suction power, handhelds have the weakest suction simply due to the smaller size of the motor. The stick vacuum typically runs the middle ground. Its power may be determined by whether it is corded or cordless. Robotic vacuums also have weaker suction power and really shouldn’t be the only vacuum for most people.
Cleaning needs: The final consideration are your cleaning needs. Children, pets, carpet, hard floors, allergies, drapes, stairs…there are many factors that must be considered. For homes with children and pets, vacuums that can deep clean as well as capture allergens may be the best. Many parents and pet owners also have a handheld vacuum that can be used in the car or for quick clean-ups. For smaller areas that may not have as many cleaning needs, stick vacuums can be a great choice. Homes with stairs, curtains, and furniture that should be cleaned regularly may benefit from having a canister vacuum with the proper attachments. Before you take a load off this public holiday, ensure you have everything you need to kick back and celebrate the day in style, and shop for deals on vacuum cleaners, flags, and more.
